{"id":12855,"date":"2020-04-03T01:55:27","date_gmt":"2020-04-03T01:55:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/?p=12855"},"modified":"2020-04-29T01:45:47","modified_gmt":"2020-04-29T01:45:47","slug":"i-believe-in-christ-but-why-should-i-believe-the-bible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/index.php\/2020\/04\/03\/i-believe-in-christ-but-why-should-i-believe-the-bible\/","title":{"rendered":"I believe in Christ,  but why should I believe the Bible?"},"content":{"rendered":"<body><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"675\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.comwp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Christ.jpg?resize=675%2C1000&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12856\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Christ.jpg?w=675&amp;ssl=1 675w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Christ.jpg?resize=400%2C593&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Christ.jpg?resize=203%2C300&amp;ssl=1 203w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>The Greatest \u201cStory\u201d Ever Told?<\/figcaption><\/figure><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI knew that the cross was simultaneously, the point of greatest suffering, the point of death and transformation, and the symbolic centre of the world\u201d<\/p><cite> <em>Jordan Peterson, 12 Rules for Life<\/em> <\/cite><\/blockquote><p> \u201c<em>Who is Jordan Peterson?<\/em>\u201d you may ask.  <\/p><p>The <em>New Yorker <\/em>magazine calls him, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2018\/03\/05\/jordan-petersons-gospel-of-masculinity\">\u201cone of the most influential\u2014and polarizing\u2014public intellectuals in the English-speaking world\u201d<\/a> (as a matter of fact, he\u2019s actually a Canadian professor).<\/p><p>I, myself, am only just learning about Peterson, but so far I find him to be one of the most interesting, engaging, and provocative speakers of our generation <\/p><p>He clearly points out the overall positive effect that Christianity has had on the world, writing: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premierchristianity.com\/Past-Issues\/2018\/July-2018\/Is-Jordan-B-Peterson-the-saviour-of-Christianity\">\u201cChristianity elevated the individual soul, placing slave and master, commoner and nobleman alike on the same metaphysical footing, rendering them equal before God and the law. It\u2019s nothing short of a miracle.\u201d<\/a> Yet, he does not claim to <em>be<\/em> a Christian, nor to believe that the Bible is <em>true.<\/em><\/p><p>The obvious question, then, seems like it should be, <em>Is it?<\/em><\/p><p>I think it is. <em>Why?<\/em><\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I have chosen to believe that Jesus is who He said He was.<ul><li>Remember that C.S. Lewis wrote: \u201cA man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic\u2014on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg\u2014or else he would be the Devil of Hell.\u201d<\/li><li>Matthew 26:63-68, where the high priest accuses Jesus of blasphemy for saying He was the Messiah<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Jesus considered the Bible to be the \u201cWord of God.\u201d<ul><li> John 10:35, where Jesus said that the Hebrew \u201cScriptures\u201dcould not be \u201cbroken\u201d(the  Greek word translated here as \u201cbroken\u201d is  <em>ly\u014d<\/em> , which <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G3089&amp;t=CSB\">Thayer\u2019s Greek Lexicon<\/a><\/em> defines as \u201c<strong>to annul, subvert; to do away with; to deprive of authority<\/strong>.\u201d  <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The New Testament was written by Jesus\u2019 friends and relatives and people who knew them personally.<ul><li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>What I find very compelling about these writings is that they often include many instances of Jesus \u201capostles\u201d<\/em> <em> doing many uncomplimentary things<\/em><\/span><\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol><p>Accepting Jesus as the long-awaited Jewish Messiah (and therefore, the Christ) allows one to find the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">epistemology<\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ontology<\/span>, and even the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cosmology<\/span> of the Bible to be clearly stated, understandable, and comprehensive.<\/p><p>The Bible as \u201c<em>True truth\u201d<\/em> should be able to stand up against all scrutiny, historically,  prophetically, doctrinally, ethically, and morally. <\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/G\/01\/books\/aplus\/hcsb\/HCSB_reliable.pdf\">In  <em>The Historical Reliability of the Old Testament<\/em>, British Bible scholar, Kenneth A. Kitchen,  defends the historicity of the Old Testament. <\/a><\/li><li>And in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.org\/article\/archaeology-and-new-testament\">Archaeology and the New Testament<\/a><\/em>,  the author tells us that, \u201cArchaeology has played a major role in determining the trustworthiness of the Bible\u2026 One of the greatest archaeologists\u2026wrote: <\/li><\/ul><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> \u2018I began with a mind unfavorable to it [Acts], \u2026but more recently I found myself often brought into contact with the Book of Acts as an authority for the topography, antiquities, and society of Asia Minor. It was gradually borne in upon me that in various details the narrative showed marvelous truth.\u2019<\/p><cite><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">St. Paul the Traveller and the Roman Citizen<\/span><\/em>,  By Sir William Mitchell Ramsay, 1896<\/cite><\/blockquote><p>Simon Peter, a man who knew Jesus well, often considered the leader of the early church, once wrote:<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> \u201cFor no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.\u201d<\/p><cite>2 Peter 1:20<\/cite><\/blockquote><p>This is actually from a very interesting portion of the New Testament:<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cFor we <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">did not follow cleverly devised myths<\/span> when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">we were eyewitnesses of his majesty<\/span><\/em>.  For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, \u2018This is my beloved Son,\u00a0with whom I am well pleased,\u2019  we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.  And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">you will do well to pay attention<\/span> as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone\u2019s own interpretation.  For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. <\/p><cite>2 Peter 1:16-21<\/cite><\/blockquote><p>So what problem are you having with the Bible?
