{"id":12861,"date":"2020-04-25T03:04:15","date_gmt":"2020-04-25T03:04:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/?p=12861"},"modified":"2020-04-28T02:14:27","modified_gmt":"2020-04-28T02:14:27","slug":"are-versions-really-an-issue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/index.php\/2020\/04\/25\/are-versions-really-an-issue\/","title":{"rendered":"Are versions really an issue?"},"content":{"rendered":"<body><p>Recently, someone I love very much mentioned that one of the reasons he doesn\u2019t believe the Bible is because there are so many versions\u2013<em>which one is right<\/em>? Today, we\u2019re going to look at that.<\/p><p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/The%20Bible%20as%20%E2%80%9CTrue%20truth%E2%80%9D%20should%20be%20able%20to%20stand%20up%20against%20all%20scrutiny,%20historically,%20prophetically,%20doctrinally,%20ethically,%20and%20morally.\">our last blog<\/a>, we postulated that the Bible, as \u201c<em>True truth,\u201d<\/em> should be able to stand up against all scrutiny, historically, prophetically, doctrinally, ethically, and morally.  And we <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">are<\/span> going to look at that, but first, we took a look at the agreement of the versions with each other<\/p><p class=\"has-background has-light-blue-background-color\">So, we took it as a <em><strong>hypothesis<\/strong><\/em>, and tested it (<strong>see below<\/strong>).*  <em>What did we find<\/em>?<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">hypothesis = \"a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation\" (<em>Bing<\/em>)<\/pre><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.comwp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_0816-768x1024.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12893\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_0816.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_0816.jpg?resize=400%2C533&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_0816.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_0816.jpg?resize=1152%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_0816.jpg?resize=1200%2C1600&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG_0816.jpg?w=1536&amp;ssl=1 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Hypothesis confirmed!<\/strong><\/em> The versions and randomly-picked verses were substantially equivalent.<\/p><p>So then, we are ready to move on to the propositions themselves.<\/p><p>In Acts 17:24-27, we see a historical proposition that is unique to the Bible. It is basically making a <em><strong>truth claim<\/strong><\/em> that God, not only created the earth, but strategically planned that various cultures and civilizations would exist <em>where<\/em> and <em>when <\/em>they did (including their living conditions, economies and the natural resources that would be at their disposal). That\u2019s quite a claim. Yet, if you believe that Jesus is God, if you accept His claims about Himself, then these other claims are not a leap from logic.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">truth claim \"a hypothesis not yet verified by experience.\" (<em>Dictionary.com<\/em>)<\/pre><p>In 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, we have a prophecy, which is a kind of a truth claim about the future, and this one is predicting an event called the \u201ccatching away,\u201d or <strong><em>rapture<\/em><\/strong>. This, too, is not far-fetched if Jesus is indeed the all-powerful Son of God He claimed to be.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">rapture = \"When Christ returns, all of the elect who have died will be raised and transformed into a glorious state, along with the living elect, and then be caught up to be with Christ.\" (<em>Catholic.com<\/em>)<\/pre><p>In 2 Timothy 3:16, we have a proposition that the Bible is not only useful, but trustworthy. <em>Why<\/em>? Because it is far from a collection of writings by smart, holy men. It claims to have been <em>given<\/em>, that is <em>inspired<\/em> <em>of <\/em>or \u201c<em>breathed<\/em>\u201d (from the Greek word, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G2315&amp;t=KJV\">the\u00f3pneustos<\/a><\/strong>) by God Himself.<\/p><p>In Romans 13:8-9, we see what probably is viewed axiomatically by most people, at least in Western Civilization, \u201cHe that loveth his neighbour, hath fulfilled the law.\u201d In fact, the Broadway musical <em>Les<\/em> <em>Miserables, <\/em>based on the novel by Frenchman Victor Hugo, includes in one of its songs, the famous line:<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cTo love another person, is to see the face of God\u201d<\/p><cite><em>Jean Valjean<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote><figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Les Mis\u00e9rables (2012) - Epilogue Scene (10\/10) | Movieclips\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/88T3elu2wfE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>Another Scripture verse is Ephesians 5:11, \u201cAnd have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.\u201d<\/p><p>This moral proposition might be considered by many, including C.S. Lewis, as part of the <em>Tao<\/em>.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Tao = \"traditional morality, moral law, the knowledge of right and wrong, virtue or the Way.
