The Embarkation of the Pilgrims<\/p>

In 1532, Niccolo Machiavelli published his famous work on political theory, called \u201cThe Prince<\/em>.\u201d He had used Spain\u2019s King Ferdinand (the same one who sent out Christopher Columbus<\/a><\/em>) as a model for perfect governance. <\/p>

Unfortunately, his model included brutality<\/a> <\/em>and ambition<\/a><\/em>, and always endeavoring, \u201cabove all things<\/em>,\u201d to gain \u201cthe reputation of being a great and remarkable man<\/strong><\/a>\u201d (<\/em>like Nimrod at the Tower of Babel [see Genesis 10:10 and 11:1-9])<\/em>, and to always keep \u201cthe minds of his people in suspense and admiration<\/a><\/em>\u201d of King Ferdinand and his ambitious pursuit of gold and glory<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>

Therefore, it should not surprise anyone that the Spanish Conquistadores who colonized America brought with them Machiavelli\u2019s views that in politics, the end justifies the mean<\/em>s<\/a> and that political and public moralit<\/a>y <\/em>are unnecessary, and even to be avoided<\/em><\/strong>.<\/a> <\/p>

It is important that we understand that these are <\/em>the fundamental ideas<\/span> that the \u201cSpanish Golden Age\u201d was built on.<\/em><\/p>

The Spanish Golden Age (the 1500s-1600s<\/a>) may be considered to have been contemporaneous with what we often call the Renaissance<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, and its accompanying zeitgeist<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. <\/p>

zeitgeist = \"the defining spirit<\/strong> or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time.\" (Bing<\/em>)<\/pre>
The defining spirit<\/em> of the Renaissance was \u201cRebirth<\/em><\/strong>,\u201c<\/strong> which sounds good\u2026 But it was actually only the rebirth of pagan<\/em> Greek and Roman values and ideas that stood in direct contras<\/span>t<\/a> <\/em>to those of Christianity, upon which Medieval Western Civilization had been built.<\/p>
And interestingly\u2013but not surprisingly\u2013it was (this same<\/a>) Ferdinand\u2019s grandson, King Charles I of Spain, who later, as Holy Roman Emperor Charles V<\/em><\/strong>, would condemn the Christian reformer<\/em> Martin Luther<\/strong> as a heretic, ban him as a political outlaw, and order his writings to be burned<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>

Yet, soon afterward, Luther working in hiding<\/a>, translated the Bible into the common language of the German people, inspiring a young Englishman named William Tyndale who just<\/em> happened<\/em> to be living in exile in Luther\u2019s hometown in Germany<\/a> at the time. Tyndale then translated the Bible into English, and had it smuggled back into his home country in England<\/a>.<\/p>
60 years later, Charles\u2019 son, Phillip II (Ferdinand\u2019s great-grandson<\/a>) became the champion of what became known as the Counter-Reformation<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>
The Counter Reformation was an all-out <\/strong><\/em>cultural<\/a>, religious<\/a>, and even military <\/a>war<\/strong> intended to reverse the the work of Luther and Tyndale<\/a>.  <\/em><\/p>
Philip II sent the Spanish Armada<\/em><\/a> (the largest fleet ever seen in Europe up to that time<\/a>) to attack England, and to restore the religious<\/a> and political<\/a> status quo of what had been Spain\u2019s Golden Age. The Armada was destroyed by a storm. <\/p>
In fact, the Spanish Armada was sent three times to destroy England\u2013<\/a><\/strong>in 1588, 1596, and 1597\u2013<\/a>but it was destroyed three times<\/a>, <\/strong>each time by bad weather<\/span><\/a>!<\/em><\/p>

Providentially<\/a>, then, William Tyndale\u2019s Bible seems to have ended up making its way into the hands of a generation of common Englishmen, just<\/em> as their King Henry VIII was making himself the head of a whole new church in England, and just<\/em> as England was preparing to replace Spain as a world power<\/a>. <\/p>
And it was these same Englishmen who brought that same Bible\u2013<\/em>and its ideas<\/strong>\u2013to the New World. <\/em><\/p>
In 1607, Captain John Smith was among 100 colonists who planted Jamestown<\/em> in Virginia. In 1608, Smith became the leader of the community, and established measures to save it from ruin, including an instruction from the Bible.<\/p>
\u201cIf anyone will not work, neither shall he eat\u201d<\/p>2nd Thessalonians 3:10<\/cite><\/blockquote>
This is not to say that Captain John Smith was, necessarily, a Christian\u2013only that the Bible was already starting to affect the way that everyday people chose to live their lives.<\/p>
But soon after (in 1620) a group of Christian people established Plymouth Plantation as a Christian community\u2013based on the example of the early church (in the book of Acts<\/a>).<\/p>
Their Governor, William Bradford (in his book, Of Plimouth Plantation), called the Plymouth settlers pilgrims<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, referring to the New Testament book of Hebrews, chapter 11, verse 13<\/a>.<\/p>

The chapter goes on to say:<\/p>
\u201c\u2026Those who say such things (calling themselves pilgrims) declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that\u00a0country\u00a0from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly\u00a0country.<\/em>..\u201d<\/p>Hebrews 11:14-16<\/cite><\/blockquote>
And that\u2019s the way they lived. They left behind all that England was, and whatever comfort it had been for them, and looked forward to life in this New<\/em> England<\/a>, and what they dreamed would be a better<\/em> world for them and their families. <\/p>
Other Christians followed them to New England, setting up what they called the Massachusetts Bay Colony<\/a><\/em>, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.  The Governor of the Massachusetts colony, John Winthrop, saw New England prophetically<\/em>, quoting from Matthew 5:14.<\/p>
\u201cFor, we must consider (he wrote) <\/em>that we shall be like a City upon a Hill; the eyes of all people are on us.\u201d<\/p>John Winthrop, \u201cA Model of Christian Charity<\/em>,\u201d 1630<\/cite><\/blockquote>
And just a few years later, in 1639, Christians from the (then) small towns of Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield in Connecticut drew up \u201cthe first written constitution known to history..<\/a>.\u201d The \u201cFundamental Orders\u201d (as they called them) were based on a sermon by Reverend Thomas Hooker<\/a> on May 31, 1638. The text for his sermon had been Deuteronomy 1:13.<\/p>
\u201cChoose wise, understanding, and knowledgeable men from among your tribes, and I will make them heads over you\u2026\u201d<\/p>Deuteronomy 1:13<\/cite><\/blockquote>
In his sermon, Hooker asserted that based on the Old Testament example<\/a> of the ancient Israelites (which was imitated by early Christians in the New Testament book of Acts<\/a>), \u201cthe foundation of authority is laid in the free consent of the people\u2026\u201d<\/p>
That idea could not have come out of the Spanish Golden Age. It could not have come out of the Renaissance, or the thought of Machiavelli. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>
The Bible says that:<\/p>
\u201cWhere the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.\u201d<\/p>2 Corinthians 3:17<\/cite><\/blockquote>
But the Bible also says that:<\/p>
\u201cThe whole creation groans<\/span><\/strong> and labors with birth pangs (because it has been subjected to <\/em>corruption<\/em><\/strong>) \u2026\u201d<\/p>Romans 8:20<\/cite><\/blockquote>
That is why the American experience has not matched up with the prophetic voices of Winthrop and Hooker, or all their hopes and dreams for America<\/span><\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>
But one day,<\/p>
America and<\/em> \u201cthe creation itself\u2026will<\/span><\/strong> be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the (revelation of the) <\/em>children of God\u2026\u201d<\/p>Romans 8:19, 21<\/cite><\/blockquote>
It is time for the children of God in America to shake off <\/strong><\/em>the chains of corruption<\/strong>, to step out of <\/strong><\/em>the grave-clothes<\/strong> of past experience, and to walk in what has been prophesied over this land<\/span>. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>
That is our legacy (<\/strong><\/em>and America\u2019s legacy), and (<\/strong><\/em>as John Winthrop wrote) \u201cthe eyes of all people (shall be) upon us<\/span><\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
