It is said that he replied:<\/p><p class=\"has-bright-blue-color has-yellow-background-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em><strong>\u201cA Republic, if you can keep it.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>Our founding fathers knew that the history of republics was not good, and that they often tended to end in tyranny. <\/p><p>For example, t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Dutch-Republic\">he once very successful Dutch Republic<\/a>, formed in 1588, had declined and decayed until it had all but disintegrated by the time of the American founding. And in their own history, their ancestors had formed a republic named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britainfirst.org\/oliver-cromwell\">the English Commonwealth<\/a>, in 1649, but it had only lasted  for <em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">11<\/span><\/strong><\/em> years, until 1660. <\/p><p>But the primary example that the founding fathers looked to \u2013 <em>which had been the model for all later republics<\/em> \u2013 was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/lessons-decline-democracy-from-ruined-roman-republic-180970711\/\">Roman Republic<\/a>, which lasted 482 years, but <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">it<\/span><\/em><\/strong> ended tragically in 60 years of civil wars and the rise of the dictator, Julius Caesar.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/julius-caesar-626422__340.jpg?resize=405%2C540&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13540\" width=\"405\" height=\"540\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/julius-caesar-626422__340.jpg?w=255&amp;ssl=1 255w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/julius-caesar-626422__340.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 405px) 85vw, 405px\" \/><figcaption><em>Julius Caesar<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p class=\"has-bright-blue-color has-yellow-background-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Why<\/span> do republics fail<\/strong>?<\/em><\/p><p>In pondering this question, I was drawn back once again to a study of the world\u2019s very first tyrant, Nimrod (<em>first referenced in Genesis 10:8<\/em>). <\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cCush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth.\u201d (<em>the Hebrew word used here is \u201c<kbd>gib\u00f4r<\/kbd>\u201c)<\/em>.<\/p><cite>Genesis 10:8<\/cite><\/blockquote><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Gibor = \"strong, mighty, <em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">impetuous<\/span><\/strong><\/em>\" (Genesius' Hebrew Lexicon)<\/pre><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Impetuous = \"acting or done quickly and without thought or care,\" (<em>Bing<\/em>) marked by impulsive vehemence or passion (or) by force and violence..\" (<em>Merriam-Webster<\/em>)<\/pre><p>God had commanded mankind to spread out and take dominion <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">over the earth<\/span><\/em><\/strong>, but instead the people congregated together in a city and started dominating <em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">each other<\/span><\/strong><\/em>, and Nimrod was the worst of them.<\/p><p class=\"has-bright-blue-color has-yellow-background-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"font-size:24px\"><em><strong>So<\/strong><\/em>, <strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">why<\/span> do people follow tyrants<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p><p>An article in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/culture-shrink\/201702\/why-do-people-follow-tyrants\">Psychology Today<\/a> claims that people hunger for \u201cstrong<strong> <\/strong>parental<strong> <\/strong>figures,\u201d and that they are afraid to take responsibility for their own lives, preferring instead to stay on the sidelines, and \u201clet someone else run the show,\u201d even though the people they follow are often \u201cnarcissistic,\u201d \u201ccalculating,\u201d and \u201ccruel.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Do you think that is true? That people are afraid to take responsibility for their own lives, and that they would rather follow the directions of someone else, even if they have demonstrated themselves to be narcissistic and cruel?<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>That\u2019s exactly what the Bible says that the ancient people of Israel did, although they were warned against it.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201c\u2018This is how a king will reign over you,\u2019 Samuel said\u2026 \u2018He will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give\u00a0them\u00a0to his servants. He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage\u2026 He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants. And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves\u2026'\u201d<\/p><cite>1 Samuel 8:11-18<\/cite><\/blockquote><p class=\"has-bright-blue-color has-yellow-background-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"font-size:24px\">When told that George Washington had turned down an offer to become America\u2019s first king, King George III of England said: \u201c<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/colors-newyork.com\/what-did-king-george-iii-say-about-george-washington\/\">If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world<\/a><\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<\/p><p>But the people who rule our country today have little resemblance to George Washington. <\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/culture-shrink\/201702\/why-do-people-follow-tyrants\">Psychology Today article<\/a> goes on to say this about tyrants:<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThey tend to have a blend of\u00a0narcissistic\u00a0and antisocial\u00a0personality disorder\u00a0traits such as a lack of\u00a0empathy, grandiosity, thirst for power and control,\u00a0lying\u00a0and deceit, indifference to conventional laws or rules or\u00a0morality, and more.\u201d<\/p><cite>Psychology Today, February 2, 2017<\/cite><\/blockquote><p>It remind us of a warning by one of the Founding Fathers, James Wilson of Pennsylvania:<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cSir, there are two passions which have a powerful influence on the affairs of men. These are ambition and avarice; the love of power, and the love of money. Separately each of these has great force in prompting men to action; but when united in view of the same object, they have in many minds the most violent effects. Place before the eyes of such men, a post of honour that shall be at the same time a place of profit, and they will move heaven and earth to obtain it\u2026 And of what kind are the men that will strive for this profitable pre- eminence, through all the bustle of cabal, the heat of contention, the infinite mutual abuse of parties, tearing to pieces the best of characters? It will not be the wise and moderate; the lovers of peace and good order, the men fittest for the trust. It will be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the bold<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the violent<\/span>, the men of strong passions and indefatigable activity in their selfish pursuits. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.\u201d<\/p><cite>Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, Daniel 3:17-18<\/cite><\/blockquote><p>William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, once said:<\/p><p class=\"has-bright-blue-color has-yellow-background-color has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cThose people who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>And in <a href=\"https:\/\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/11\/the-bible-christianity-american-government-2\/\">our third chapter<\/a>, we quoted from Thomas Jefferson\u2019s <strong><em>1787 Notes on the State of Virginia<\/em><\/strong>, where he wrote:<\/p><p class=\"has-bright-blue-color has-yellow-background-color has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>\u201cDependence begets subservience and venality, suffocates the germ of virtue, and prepares fit tools for the designs of ambition.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p><em>What is venality<\/em>?<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">venality = \"openness to bribery or corruption\" (<em>dictionary.com<\/em>)<\/pre><p>One thing that Mordecai, Daniel, and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego definitely had in common is that they were <em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span><\/strong><\/em> open to corruption. They were incorruptible, in the same way that George Washington was incorruptible. If we want to be able to stand against tyranny, and against manipulation \u2013 <em><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">even when your government is telling you otherwise<\/span><\/strong><\/em>, we have to take responsibility for our own lives.<\/p><p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Second Chronicles 7:14 says:<\/p><p class=\"has-bright-blue-color has-yellow-background-color has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\u201cIf My people who are called by My name will\u00a0humble\u00a0themselves, and\u00a0pray\u00a0and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>God is ready to heal our land.
