I would like to further point out that this is particularly important in direct relation to the consequences involved. <\/p><p>For example, I have often been involved in the ketchup\/mustard controversy that surrounds the eating of hot dogs.. You see, most of our kids are in the ketchup camp, while my wife and I have always come down on the side of mustard (especially with onions or sauerkraut!) But really, what does it matter? What is the big deal? The stakes are higher, as are people\u2019s passions. And the consequences of our ideas, and our decisions are more serious.<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">consequences: \" a result or effect of an action or condition,\" \" importance or relevance.\" (<em>Bing<\/em>)<\/pre><p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><em>How do we know if we\u2019re right?<\/em><\/p><p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I suggest that it is\u2013<strong>ultimately<\/strong>\u2013a matter of <em><strong>authority<\/strong><\/em>, and since each of us is responsible for our own decisions, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">we each get to decide<\/span> <\/strong>who to give authority to. And we all do, everyday, about all kinds of issues:<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">authority:\"the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience,\" \"the power to influence others, especially because of one's commanding manner or one's recognized knowledge about something,\" \"official permission; sanction.\" (<em>Bing<\/em>)<\/pre><p>Here are examples of examples of things  or people to whom we tend to grant authority:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>experts<\/li>\n\n<li>books\/authors<\/li>\n\n<li>magazines\/newspapers<\/li>\n\n<li>movies\/TV<\/li>\n\n<li>news<\/li>\n\n<li>science\/scientists<\/li>\n\n<li>doctors<\/li>\n\n<li>experience<\/li>\n\n<li>tradition<\/li>\n\n<li>parents<\/li>\n\n<li>pastors<\/li>\n\n<li>priests<\/li>\n\n<li>presidents<\/li>\n\n<li>rabbis<\/li>\n\n<li>teachers<\/li>\n\n<li>society<\/li>\n\n<li>consensus<\/li>\n\n<li>intuition<\/li>\n\n<li>revelation<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The question that comes to mind is <strong><em>Why<\/em>?<\/strong> <em>And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">how do we know<\/span> that our authorities are right? <\/em><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.comwp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ThinkingAccuratelyEducation.com-Created-in-Canva.png?resize=800%2C800&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5;object-fit:cover;width:653px;height:auto\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ThinkingAccuratelyEducation.com-Created-in-Canva.png?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ThinkingAccuratelyEducation.com-Created-in-Canva.png?resize=250%2C250&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ThinkingAccuratelyEducation.com-Created-in-Canva.png?resize=100%2C100&amp;ssl=1 100w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ThinkingAccuratelyEducation.com-Created-in-Canva.png?resize=400%2C400&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ThinkingAccuratelyEducation.com-Created-in-Canva.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ThinkingAccuratelyEducation.com-Created-in-Canva.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thinkingaccuratelyeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ThinkingAccuratelyEducation.com-Created-in-Canva.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Isn\u2019t <em>all <\/em>knowing really a matter of <strong>believing<\/strong> and <strong>trust<\/strong>?<\/p><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">belief: \"an acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists,\"\"something one accepts as true or real; a firmly held opinion or conviction,\"\"trust, faith, or confidence in someone or something.\" <\/pre><pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">trust:\"firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something,\" \"believe in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of.\"<\/pre><p>Do yourself a favor. Give this some consideration. <strong>Be willing to wonder<\/strong> if\u2013<em>perhaps-<\/em>you might be granting a bit too much authority to someone who might\u2013<em>possibly\u2013<\/em>be a tiny bit less reliable that you first thought they were.
